As a recent graduate and now five months into my role as a Staff Engineer at Howell Engineering, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how much civil engineering has evolved and how much it still relies on strong local roots. Not long ago, projects were designed primarily with 2D drawings, manual calculations and limited field data. Today, we use advanced modeling software, drone surveys and data-driven design tools to visualize projects before a single shovel hits the ground. The profession has transformed rapidly, but what has impressed me most is how innovation works best when paired with real-world, local experience.

At 22 years old and just beginning my career, it’s interesting to think about engineering before these modern tools existed. Back then, knowledge was passed down by word of mouth, learned directly from mentors in the field, gained through trial and error and lessons learned on job sites. Projects relied heavily on paper plans, handwritten notes and the practical judgment of seasoned engineers who understood their communities inside and out. Today, we can simulate traffic flow, stormwater movement and site grading digitally before construction even begins. That shift means fewer surprises and more efficiency, but it also makes me appreciate how much the profession was built on shared experience and local wisdom.

Modern civil engineering now includes tools such as Civil 3D, smart infrastructure sensors, sustainable stormwater solutions and high-performance materials that enhance durability and reduce environmental impact. These advancements allow us to design safer roads, more resilient drainage systems and longer-lasting infrastructure.

However, technology alone doesn’t guarantee success. Understanding the importance of design parameters like local soil conditions, weather patterns, municipal regulations and community expectations remains just as critical as mastering new software. That blend of cutting-edge innovation and hands-on regional experience is where “Local Knowhow” truly comes to life every day.

In my short time here, I’ve learned that being an engineer isn’t just about applying what I studied in college; it’s about learning from those who know the history and character of the communities we serve. Civil engineering has evolved from hand calculations to advanced computer models, but its main purpose will remain the same: build infrastructure that improves everyday life.

At Howell Engineering, innovation doesn’t replace local expertise — it strengthens it. I’m proud to be growing in a place where modern engineering tools and “Local Knowhow” work hand in hand to shape the future of our communities.
