Since my turn on the newsletter coincidentally falls on the same week I started at Howell, reflecting on my first year only makes sense. Let's just say a lot has changed. Little did I know that deciding to work in West Chester would be such a pivotal shift in my career.
Coming from a large corporation where I felt like just a number, I had not been seen as an aspiring professional engineer who wanted to grow. I was stagnant and felt like I did not fit in with the culture. However, that all changed when I started at Howell.
Within just one year, I now belong, at a place where I can grow and evolve as a civil designer. It’s nice to have people sit down and teach me things I had not learned previously. For example, one day, I’ll have Justin Brewer teaching me principles of civil engineering, and the next, Jason Schmidt demonstrating tricks in CAD that I didn't even know existed.
Since working at Howell, I’ve learned so much more about stormwater management design and client interactions. I appreciate the learning tools like the CAD training classes we have with the Nave Newell office every Wednesday.
Howell has benefited me career-wise, and personally. As an introvert, being in this office has helped me gain the confidence to speak up, ask questions and socialize a little bit. Back in October, I was given the great opportunity to represent Howell at the Drexel Career Fair. Since then, I have been extremely grateful for that experience. It put me out of my comfort zone and made me realize I AM capable of getting out of my shell.
I have developed great relationships with everyone in the office, especially my team. I am surrounded by talented designers and engineers who are always willing to share their knowledge with me. I like to say, "Every day you learn something new," whether it is work-related or not, and that has exactly been the case. Lastly, I can't forget about my four-legged furry friends, George and Roscoe, who never fail to put a smile on my face.
Who would've thought that leap of faith would turn out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made? I am proud to say I’ve come a long way since last year and will keep on growing. I look forward to what the future holds for me here at Howell.
