We just lived through a "very active season of above average snowfall." Not the record for snow totals, but if you’d ask a member of the Howell Surveying team how their winter went, there’s a good chance they’d say "extra layers and pockets full of hand warmers."
As you know, this winter did not hold back. Freezing temperatures, bone-chilling winds and persistent snow and ice covered the landscape for weeks at a time. Control points, boundary evidence, physical features and the natural topography of the land we rely on were often buried beneath inches or even feet of snow. What’s normally a straightforward walk across a site quickly turned into slow, methodical treks.

The good news? This wasn’t our team's first winter in the field. Experience makes the difference. By working in pairs, one crew member identified and cleared critical features while the other set up and operated the equipment to capture accurate data. We also have a LiDAR-equipped drone in our toolkit, which supplemented topographic data collection when ground conditions made fieldwork more challenging. This approach kept projects moving forward even when conditions were less than ideal.

As we look ahead to longer days, milder temperatures and clearer sights, we remain focused on maintaining steady progress and delivering dependable results. Seasonal challenges are part of the job, and our team is equipped to handle them efficiently. We appreciate your continued trust and look forward to supporting your projects in the future. And hopefully, no more late flakes for this year.
