Howell will be doing some much-needed spring cleaning this May. As members of the PennDOT Adopt-A-Highway program, our team will be cleaning a 2.5-mile stretch of Paoli Pike. We had a great turnout last fall with around 30 volunteers, and we’re hoping for the same again this spring. It’s always a nice opportunity for our people to get outside, work together and give back to the community.

For me, this project brings two things to mind. First, we need to stop littering and throwing trash out of our car windows. I know you don’t litter, but we’re filling large trash bags with what’s been left behind by someone. Over the years, our survey crews have found some pretty interesting finds discarded along the roadside, and I can tell you it’s very, very rarely cash.

Second, it’s an important reminder to slow down when you see people along the road. Many of our employees spend at least some part of their day near traffic. We make every effort to keep our teams safe, but we can’t control how others drive. While it’s not common, there have been times when motorists speed up to get around crews instead of slowing down.
So next time you’re driving along Paoli Pike, take in the cleaner views—and if you spot our trucks and orange vests, give us a wave. More importantly, keep your speed in check and stay alert. Small actions like that go a long way in keeping everyone safe and our community looking its best.

Howell is proud to do its part to help keep our community beautiful. If you, your company or local group is interested in getting involved, you can learn more here: https://www.adoptahighway.penndot.pa.gov
