The Eastern Shore is a place where Marylanders and visitors enjoy significant assets of natural beauty, national wildlife refuges, productive farmland and the home of Maryland's seafood industry. To maintain the shore's rich history, we carefully consider the area’s difficult and distinctive development challenges. Each requires important choices within these communities to address the current lack of public facilities.
As development increased and areas within Anne Arundel County grew, our direct neighbor on the shore, Queen Anne's County, continued to honor its rural and agricultural setting, natural resources and maritime amenities. Over the past decade, Queen Anne's County has initiated various public facility improvements, redevelopment and cluster subdivision projects under the direction of a logical and comprehensive long-range plan.

This is a balance of rich history and economic growth, while providing sustainable, adequate public facilities and housing. We, as civil engineers, play an important part in working with our development partners, communities and outlying counties to design infrastructure that maintains the characteristics of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
These goals can be achieved, for example, in Caroline County, by adopting comparable long-range plans to maintain 85% open, preserved space in and around smaller cluster communities with centralized commercial districts. As civil engineers, the most effective way to maintain Maryland's best assets is to incorporate environmental, economic, social and resource conservation benefits into our designs.
By creating more livable environments, civil engineers improve the quality of life for population areas within these counties. We’re promoting rural pedestrian and tourist-friendly preserves to enhance physical activity and social interaction, leading to more connected communities along the Eastern Shore.
At Terrain, we see this as an important movement and are always willing to provide industry-leading designs that are sustainable.
