In our field of work, health, safety, and welfare are always at the forefront of our minds, whether driving, walking, or even riding a bike. I bring you a quick refresher with some safety tips for both drivers and cyclists as the weather warms up and we hit the road this summer.

Be Seen, Be Safe:

  • Lights & Reflectors: Equip your bike with a white front light and a red rear light, visible from a distance. Don't forget the reflective tape on your bike and helmet for added nighttime visibility.
  • Bright Clothing: Wear brightly colored clothing, especially during low-light conditions. Consider reflective vests or armbands for extra visibility.

Gearing Up for Safety:

  • Helmet: A properly fitted helmet is your best defense in a crash. Invest in a good quality helmet and wear it every single ride, no exceptions!
  • Brakes: Ensure your brakes are in good working order. Regularly check brake pads for wear and tear and adjust tension if needed.
  • Be Weather Aware: Check the weather forecast before heading out. Avoid riding in heavy rain, strong winds, or extreme temperatures.
  • Ride Sober: Alcohol and drugs can significantly impair your judgment and reaction time. Always ride sober.

Sharing the Road:

  • Rules of the Road: Follow traffic laws just like drivers. Ride with the flow of traffic, signal turns, and stop at stop signs and red lights.
  • Predictable Movements: Maintain a straight line and avoid weaving in and out of traffic. Signal your intentions well in advance for turns and lane changes.
  • Communication is Key: Use a bell or your voice to alert pedestrians and drivers of your presence, especially at intersections.
  • Plan Your Route: Choose routes with designated bike lanes or low-traffic areas whenever possible.

Tips for Drivers:

  • Stay Aware: Bikers are taught to ride with the traffic, so be sure to look out for them along the left of your lane.
  • Give Space: Make sure to leave a minimum of four feet of space between your vehicle and the cyclist when passing.
  • Exercise Patience: Always wait for a safe opportunity to pass cyclists to ensure the safety of both the cyclist and yourself.

Happy Riding!
