Landscape architecture involves the planning, design, management, and nurturing of the built and natural environments. Landscape architects work to improve human and environmental health in all communities.

It has been about nine months since Howell Engineering added an additional set of services to our list of products offered to our clients. Anyone who develops understands the requirements needed for a complete Land Development project, and Landscape Architecture is just a piece of that pie. As Landscape Architects, we are required, like our engineers, to be licensed in the state.

As the Landscape Architect here at Howell, my piece involves the” greening” of the site. I take a site plan, be it commercial, retail, or residential, and after researching the ordinance, put together a landscape plan per the township requirements. Every site is different, and some have more challenges than others.

There are many different paths in Landscape Architecture. One can specialize in parks and gardens, large-scale residential and institutional design, corporate campus, town planning… the list goes on and on depending on your interests. My background is in landscape design and horticulture, with an emphasis on horticulture and plant science. As an LA, we need to know our plants. What to plant, where to plant it, and how to take care of it. This all comes with experience and exposure to old and new techniques, design standards and other people’s work. Inspiration comes in many forms!

Local jurisdictions require Landscape Architecture services for any Land Development submission. This is where Howell Engineering stands out. With Landscape Architecture in-house, we can coordinate with the engineering and survey teams daily, find quick solutions for issues that arise and develop landscape plans that work for our client’s needs.
