In the US, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Long sunny days, trips to the shore, barbecues and time with family and friends. Along with all the good times to come, there are ways to ensure a safe, enjoyable season. Here are some tips to kick off Summer 2025:
- Wear Your Sunscreen!
If you saw me in the office over the past two weeks, you’d probably know that I did not follow my own first rule. Being in the sun can provide many benefits and vitamin D. Too much is bad for your skin and overall health. You’ve heard it before, with good reason. Sunscreen acts as a barrier between your skin and the UV rays released from the sun. Be sure to apply it liberally if you anticipate being out in the sun for an extended period of time. - Stay Hydrated!
Warm weather and outside activity in the heat can lead to excessive sweating and dehydration. Studies vary in how much water a person should drink each day, but the consensus is a minimum of 10 glasses, even more if you’re active outdoors. Having a refillable water bottle is always a good idea, keeping it nearby anytime you are out in the heat. - Plan for Poison Ivy!
Working outdoors in the garden or out for a weekend of camping, be on the lookout for poison ivy. I always remember the saying, “Leaves of Three, Let them Be”. Poison ivy is a shiny, three leaf plant that can grow pretty much anywhere. Many people get an itchy rash upon contact with the plant. If you do have to work near poison ivy, be sure to wear long clothing and gloves. Be sure to never, ever burn it which vaporizes the harmful oil. Inhaling smoke and droplets of poison ivy can cause all kinds of breathing issues. - Keep an Eye on the Fire!
Whether you’re cooking out on a grill or sitting around a campfire in the backyard, make sure someone is watching the flames. Hot, dry weather is the perfect environment for a fire to grow and spread. Grills must be placed a minimum of 10 feet from all buildings, trees and flammable materials. Be sure to have a source of water near campfires. When you’re done with a fire, douse the remaining embers with water to be sure no flames remain.
Summertime is all about making memories and having fun. With these safety tips, you can make the most of the great weather and enjoy the longer days of sunshine.
